Internet-Sales Bill Proceeds in Senate

Once again, in the land of taxation the senate is trying to impose yet more taxes on individuals and businesses. The senate has begun debating on whether online merchants that do not have a  physical presence in a state should have to pay sales tax. "The debate stems from a 1992 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that a state can't force a retailer to collect sales tax unless the retailer has a physical presence—such as a warehouse or store—within the state's borders. That has encouraged the rapid expansion of online sales that often go untaxed." If this tax passes then, along with the new healthcare regulation will punish small business. Ebay is leading the charge against this unfair tax by asking its members to call or email their senators. State and local governments are in need of tax revenue because their inefficient, and wasteful spending.

If there is passage of this bill, it will be interesting to see how businesses respond. Keeping track of sales tax in each state, city, and county will be a daunting task.
